What is twitter?

It would be inaccurate to say that Twitter is any one thing. In essence it is a social networking site and may be compared to the likes of Facebook by those who don’t understand what it’s all about. Rather than being defined as a single thing however, Twitter has various uses for different people. As well as being a way to keep in touch with your friends, Twitter can also be used for micro-blogging as well as being a vessel for delivering news and promoting oneself.

While it’s true that it has the social networking theme in common with Facebook, it is completely different insofar as it is more suited to the frenetic pace of modern life. If you want to keep friends and fans up to date with your personal life, you need a blog, but these are time consuming and this can put a dent in other plans. Twitter alleviates such concerns by imposing a 140 character limit which eliminates lengthy, irrelevant posts. Twitter is a way to keep your loved ones up to date with your movements in a concise manner indicative of the fast pace of modern society.

Twitter is also a means of getting your message seen by millions of people on the site. You get the option to follow others and if you’re lucky some people will follow you. It is the weapon of choice for celebrities to keep their adoring fans up to date with their Hollywood lifestyle. The likes of United States President, Barack Obama used Twitter throughout his election campaign to continually state his goals and mandate if he were to become leader of the country. It is also a place for disgruntled football players to openly criticise their manager and get into trouble! Twitter is the perfect place for individuals who need to reach a large audience in a short space of time.

Twitter is also turning into one of the world’s premier news sources. Such world renowned networks such as CNN have tickers that display news on the bottom of the screen. As the world is now almost fully digitised, it is relying more on the internet for fast breaking news and Twitter is at the forefront of this practice. If you are regularly on Twitter, chances are that you’ll be among the first to hear about any news story.

So in a nutshell, Twitter is a quick way to stay in touch with friends, a time saving way of communicating with fans and central to all the world’s important news stories. Twitter is the future.
